Thamani Youth of Africa has partnered with Hatua Likoni to help provide funding and connections to highly skilled pro-bono consultants,in order to support them in their quest to empower Kenyan youths through education, mentorship & employment!Let’s prepare youths to thrive in Kenya’s workforce by helping to provide scholarships for secondary and university education, mentoring and career guidance for Likoni’s top students so they can gain the skills, credentials and networks they need to contribute to and benefit from Kenya’s growing economy.
Worldwide one in three youths do not have the opportunity to continue their education past primary school. As a result many end up trapped in a cycle of poverty that deprives them of life’s most basic needs. In Kenya, and around the world, even low income youths who do complete their education often lack connections that can help them take their first step into a professional career. Hatua works on the Coast of Kenya to address these challenges by building a network of opportunity for high potential, low income youth.
Solution
In order for youths to excel they need quality education throughout primary, secondary, and university schooling. They need resume building experiences while in school and connections to a professional networks to help them find career opportunities after graduation.
High potential youths are identified who would otherwise drop out of school after 8th grade. These young people are awarded scholarships to attend both secondary school and university. Throughout their academic careers Hatua supplements their formal education with mentoring on life skills and career guidance. After secondary school they work with the students to develop their leadership skills and help them gain work experience by serving as peer mentors in secondary schools throughout their community. When students begin university they are paired with a local professional working in their field of interest. These professionals volunteer as career coaches, helping the students find internships and build networks that will help them launch their own careers. We are very excited to be supporting such a unique and impactful model!
Long-Term Impact
100% of Hatua’s 2016 alumni are now working or engaged in internships after graduating from university! With your support this high level of impact will continue.Impact is measured through employment rates and increased income of beneficiaries compared to how much they would likely be earning if they had dropped out of school.Hatua’s alumni are earning 4x the average income of youths who dropout of school.

About Likoni Kenya
Likoni is the poorest area of Mombasa. Away from the luxurious beach hotels, Likoni sits on the mainland, south of the city's centre, accessible from town only by ferry.
The Mijikenda people are indigenous to the area and make up about half the population. The second half consists of migrants and other ethnic groups(including Kikuyu, Luo, Kamba) arriving in Mombasa in search of work.
A study released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics in 2005 found that the unemployment rate in the Likoni area of Mombasa is a staggering 74%. As education is the main avenue towards employment, a large problem in the area is that many youths are unable to attend school. The largest sectors of employment in Likoni are informal street vending, stone quarrying and day laboring in the port. Most incomes are between GBP £2.5-3.5 per day and many struggle to pay rent, medical bills and school fees.
